Keep avatars?

Should avatars remain enabled? Or disable them?

Alternatively, we could use avatars to list a lot of personal information in an easy-to-read way, like country/countries where you reside, languages you know, and maybe more.

But that means that people need to make them, which means taking time to make graphics, unless someone has a handy bit of code for that, or a function that would display this info under nicks.

It would be easier to enable specified labels in the forum settings. I can select up to three specified labels to be shown under the nickname (+ gender, but that's useless).

I think most of us are so used with the Discogs system without avatars that it isn't something we really need, but the idea to list important information in the avatar field rather than an image is cool.

seriously, I think avatars is a nice thing but absolutely not important.

I say keep avatars but no signature.

Avatar helps you finding quicker the post of the member because you get used to the image.

Voted no - messes up the threads, making them hard to read. Any personal stuff to the profile page, please (do enjoy whenever Larks' Tongues in Aspic comes around though).

This reminds me of an animated GIF I've seen, supposedly based on an actual post from a gaming forum, where the "hi! I'm a girl " thread suddenly became the most popular, with no real content or other details about the girl.

Don't forget spacegirl3. And ShampooCell is a lady, too (Me thinks! please don't shout at me if I'm wrong - I've seen so many posts where others refer to ShampooCell with a male pronoun).

I suggest we throw over our plans of the new DB and start a dating site (273 male vs. 3 girls)!!

Voted no, as avatars are generally just a distraction for me (although that's fine in the chat forum for example - maybe database stuff off, other forums on?). Same for signatures and stuff. I like the idea of using it to show info about the user tho.

For me it's not important and I've given a no vote.I could have given a don't care but I'm just leaning slightly more to the no side.

Or do you mean on a individual user basis, and if so, where? I can't find it under the Profile prefrences.

Voted yes. I think it makes the site more user-friendly, but I think it has nothing to do with functionality.

After finding this rather cool (uncool) avatar I quite like the idea now.

Seriously, I which I had voted yes as I now beleive they are a very nice way to identify other members.
Also when trying to view my own posts for a second time these really speed up the process.
They add color and fun to the forums too and no matter how serious things may get they lighten the mood somewhat.

So please let me change my vote, please, please.

A few days ago I realized that the little icon next to each post subject line is green when you haven't read the post.
