Shouldn't need to ask this really.

Maybe if somebody can create a sticky at the very top explaining the situation?

It's probably not my place to answer and I'm sure you will recieve a more detailed answer but I would say there isn't really a boycott.I would assume the people who are no longer contributing and paticipating in Discogs see this as more than just a temporary move.

My own experience was (briefly, as I've said it to many times before) that there was no respect for the users and moderators of that site.
Decisions where made without pre warning and changes were put in place that where not mentioned or agreed on before hand.

When it comes to my own collection in the database I no longer feel at ease.
It has become 'all work and no play' trying to keep an eye on my collection to make sure it is not adjusted in anyway.
I also no longer trust the information to be correct and more importantly I no longer trust the people running the site.

I will finish by saying that myself and probably most of the people gathered here are just looking for something else.
I don't believe this site exists (or will exist) as a alternative to Discogs, it is just something else, somewhere else, where we can gather and create something we are all content with.

Edited:I just realised I kind of missed the request and only answered the question, not really my place to create a sticky.

AFAIK there is no "situation" people are free to contribute to any or all sites as a matter of free will.

Again AFAIK there has been no boycott of the other mentioned site, if you read the forums of both sites I'm sure that peoples feelings are well documented on both sites.

Just check all Discogs V4 threads back on Ogs. You'll find plenty of explanation over there.

It's not so much an issue of not being informed of the updates, but of unwanted updates being put in place after MANY suggestions were provided and ignored.

Add to that, the implementation of v4 (the latest version of the Discogs interface, with voting instead of moderating) feels like a quick hack that wasn't properly tested, many people are very unhappy with the site management.

The main part of v4 that people dislike is the "live" editing, making Discogs more in line with a wiki than a verified database of information. The burden of verification is being passed to others, and voting should include more people in the future, but Discogs was built on a different ideal, one that might not scale up too well.

What?! Who is Uninform?

If he needs to ask the question he's not deserving of an answer.

^My thoughts exactly. That's why I pointed him to the ogs V4 threads. I don't want to be rude or anything, but internet is anonymous as hell so please ID yourself, especially for questions like this one. :-)

@ Uniform in addition to what other folks said you can not forget the utter disregard for all the volunteer contributions totaling 10s of thousands of man hours the implementation of v4 washes away.

Its more general unrest then a boycott.

Sorry to hear about your ordeals... and thanks for clearing things up. Basically, I've not long joined Discogs, and then I started hearing all kinds of negative talks about the site, and became concerned and saw that many people were linking this site. Sounds like a real "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" case. Hopefully they'll sort things out.

The purpose of this forum is to sort out a new site, as we're considering the old one broken without a chance of fixing it. Initially, it was an open discussion forum, with no worry about having threads and posts get deleted, but it has grown thanks to the implementation of v4.

The discussions held here to create something new, not simply to complain about the old. We don't trust them to sort it out in our terms. I just thought I should clarify things, from my point of view.

That really speaks volumes! uniform is one of the (probably many) new Discogs users and this was the overwhelming feeling he got, that Discogs was in trouble. Not the kind of feeling you want from a site you're new to or considering investing time in. I too hope they work things out but (I don't hold grudges) but, regardless of that, I know we can be better than Discogs. Not because we're boycotting it (many of the users here are not) but because we know we now have an alternative! As far as new or old Discogs users, the more the merrier I say!

I doubt it, Nik and Teo are too arrogant to care about this site. Teo's sense of self infallibility may have been shaken a little but it's still his guiding philosophy.

I appreciate the responses to the question in spite of the suggestion that it doesn't deserve one. I've been using discogs to look up information for several years, and perhaps I've been under a rock but I just didn't pay attention to developments such as v4. I've made a couple of submissions, contributed some images, a small contribution compared to many I am sure. But now that I am aware of the live format of v4 which will bring disadvantages to the present moderated format, and some of the unfortunate politics going on behind the scenes, I'll be paying more attention.

So if someone asks what this is about, don't scold them for ignorance. Inform them, and you may gain another supporter for an alternative. Strength in numbers. If you want to build a viable alternative, one where information is accurate and reliable, a database that belongs to those who helped to build it, it's going to take the collective interest and effort of many many people.

I am all for an accurate and stable community discography on the Internet. If this is the beginning of one, it's of interest to me.

Welcome to our group, ten80 - we're generally a nice lot, but Discogs is quite a sore spot for many here.

Also, there's a bit of distrust for people who don't sign up with the forum, because they are a step more anonymous than the rest of us. If you can't track their comments or send them PMs, they're less a part of what we hope would be close group of individuals.

And we fear infiltration and revenge from certain parties on Discogs. Probably unfounded, but like I said, Discogs is quite a sore spot. Now that you're a member on the forum, you can read through some of the other threads to see what has happened to some users who were pushing for answers, and maybe mocking the management a bit, not throwing out racial slurs or death threats.

But we're more than a nervous bunch of music fanatics - we're trying to create something better, instead of just complaining or trying to be heard. All input is great, especially as we are forming things now, and the future of the site is quite flexible.

Cheers!
