Domains currently offline due to host-swap.

Hi everyone

You may have noticed that the four DDB domains (discographydb.com/.org/.net/.info) are currently offline. This is because the first termain ended, and I opted to switch from Nucleus.be to Leaseweb.com. Instead of the rather expensive 82,28 Euro I payed one year ago, I payed 27,99 this time.

The domains have been payed for several days ago and are now pending. The projected starting date is the 1st of March 2009 (tomorrow), so until then the domains won't be reachable. I apologise for any inconvience this may cause.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or with PM.

Damn, I always used the discographydb.com url. Had problems the last couple of days. Thanks to deejsasqui and schneckl for pointing me to this topic.

Update:

- All domains still have the 'Pending' status. The starting date, however, hasn't been changed: still says March 1st 2009.
- I notice the forum is currently working a bit slow, this has nothing to do with the domains but with actieforum.com

I'm also sorry to corne_mo and others, maybe I've should have sent an e-mail or something.

dmaxx - you could send one out now, but it looks like it'll be solved soon. It sounds like you expected the move to go smoothly, so there was no reason to concern us. Looking back, it wouldn't have been a bad idea, but now we know for next time.

How long are these domains good now?

Update: domains still pending... except www.discographydb.info, which appears to be working fine.

One year, AFAIK there is no option to preserve the domains for a longer period at once. The next renewal shouldn't cause any problems though...

Multi-year renewals are options with the domain sellers I've seen - it may simply be a method of paying up front for x annual contracts, with a discount given by the seller. For example, GoDaddy will register domains for 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 years.

dmaxx, any idea how long this take? It's still offline.

I have waited a bit longer to see what would happen, but since they are still offline (still 'Pending') I have contacted Leaseweb for more information.

Half an hour ago, http://discographydb.info also went offline. This means that the development site is now inaccessible. The FTP address and HTTP address currently point to different IPs. Calling http://[FTP-IP] leads to cpanel, http://[ddb.info-IP] is inaccessible. FTP still works.
I take this as a sign that someone actually works on the problem.

I'm happy to anounce the domains have finally been transferred today. However, they won't work just yet because I'm having a hard time with the settings.

Below is a screenshot of the control panel:



All values shown are default values. If anyone can tell me the settings for both com/org/net and info (here or PM), I'll get it sorted ASAP.

I think you best contact Schneckl. He has done all the settings using Asylums server too.

I didn't do any of the domain stuff. I only made a few webserver settings to get better error reporting etc. Don't know if my suggestions are any good, i've never come in touch with DNS settings before.

Who did the DNS settings the first time? asylum27, U_A? Tried to look it it up, but I can't find it.

As you may have noticed the domains (still) aren't working. Schneckl has contacted me on the 26th with information (thanks for that).

After a lot of trial and error I've decided to tackle this problem methodically. Let's run through the different configuration types in the panel:

A: Schneckl's advice here was to enter "discogs.actieforum.com" (which makes sense), however entering a domain name in the "IP / MX prio / CNAME url" isn't allowed. It seems like only IP's are OK. I have tried it with "74.86.239.79" instead, which doesn't work as there's no subforum specified.

AAAA: I searched for more information, seems to be IPv6 related. No need to alter, I think.

MX: mail server settings. Deffinately no need to change.

CNAME: Canonical Name: "CNAME Records are domain name aliases. Sometimes companies register their multiple domain names for their brand-names but still wish to maintain a single website. In such cases, a CNAME Record maybe used to forward traffic to their actual website. For example, www.abc.in could be CNAMEd to www.abc.com."
--> Doesn't seem necessary to me.

TXT: "A Text Record provides the ability to associate some text with a domain or a subdomain. This text is meant to strictly provide information and has no functionality as such." --> also not needed.

As far as I can tell, only the 'A' setting needs to be changed. But into what? When entering "discogs.actieforum.com" into a domain to IP converter I get "74.86.239.79", which doesn't link correctly. (I have managed to link the .info domain to that IP... now I have to find the correct one).

Also:

- I have found this post in which asylum27 wrote the primary and secondary server (hostnames) for discographydb.info. I have no clue how to configure those (see options above). In a PM I was also told to use "************" as the primary and "************" in case the others don't work. I hope asylum27 can help me out here.

- I've also read that it takes up to 24 hours for the DNS settings to update. If this is true, trial and error could take long...

Maybe I should just contact LeaseWeb in order to get it arranged? Or does anyone have ideas/suggestions/... to get this problem resolved?

True, but the admin panel was a lot easier to work with: entering a domain to link to + a primary/secondary server was enough to make everything work. The panel I'm working with now is more advanced, and has settings I haven't seen in school yet. According to leaseweb.com you should have use of Plesk Control Panel but the screen shot you've provided looks different. In their support section it states that all web hosting plans have this. Perhaps you should enquire into how to gain use of Plesk because after checking out their website it looks very easy to use and has clear instructions on how do do everything.

I see. Because it says "CNAME url" i thought it would perhaps take an URL there. To find out an URL you can open a terminal (windows: run command - type "cmd". Then you get a console window where you can type "nslookup discogs.actieforum.com", and it will give you the DNS server(s) and the IP of the webserver).

Our cnames are discographydb.* - from the screenshot i deduce that it is for configuring one of the cnames.

Our sites are actually located in virtual hosts on the servers, which means that the server actieforum.com maps the URL discogs.actieforum.com to some subdirectory internally. And there could be numerous other forums in different virtual hosts on the same server. (I hope this explanation is understandable). I was not sure if Asylum27 would like me to publish his servers, hence the PM.
You could try to enter the IP in the third column and the virtual host name in the first column. The two IPs Asylum27 wrote down in his posts appear to be the DNS servers that we used before. Now we have new ones which we must configure to direct to the webservers' IPs.

actieforum.com has two IPs: 87.98.244.6 and 91.121.71.103
the virtual host is: discogs

discographydb.info is actually at simongrigg.info/discographydb.info with the IP 69.73.138.177
vhost name: discographydb.info
The server seems to be configured a bit differently, with the vhost name after the server name (?) (it's not reachable with 69.73.138.177/discographydb.info, so i suppose it's something like a vhost).

Either this helps, or contact leaseweb.com for assistance.


Edit: maybe it's not necessary to enter the vhost at all. And the reason for the long delay in the DNS update, i believe, is the necessary worldwide distribution of the information. Perhaps the information is instantly passed to the name server where you enter it (the one at leaseweb.com). So it could be useful to add that nameserver to your systems nameservers (network configuration -> TCP/IP settings -> enter DNS servers manually).

So far I can set the IP's right (actieforum.com / simongrigg.info), but not the CNAMEs... these are the current settings:

Btw: if you can't get it to work for discogs.actieforum.com we can always create a redirect from another server location.

Strange with the discogs.actieforum.com. Now everything *discographydb.net is redirected to www.forumotion.com, as is 87.98.244.6. My next guess would be to create a CNAME: *, CNAME, discogs.actieforum.com. (is the period at the end correct?).

Has there been any progress with the rest of the domains?

Over the days I have tried a lot of combinations to no avail. The reason why I'm not very active here is -yet again- the piles of work from school (which won't decrease over the next few weeks - Still caring about DDB though!). I have contacted Leaseweb about this issue moments ago, I'll keep you up-to-date with any news.

I've got a response from Leaseweb, I'll post both the original Dutch version and a translated one.

here also counts that this isn't conform with your question, there should
be standing disccogs.actieforum.com, else actieforum.com/discogs should
be active.

To take some of your work out of your hands, and probably also
for future redirections we want to propose you to make us set a
redirect. This would cost your 1 euro per month for each redirect and
takes a lot of extra work out of hands.

A bit weird that discographydb.* isn't possible, it's that what made the .info domain work...

Not feeling tempted to pay 12 more euro for some small CNAME settings though... I'll try a few combinations more, and work with an external redirect (tinyurl or something) if that doesn't work.
